European Vegetation Survey

European Vegetation Survey (EVS) is a Working Group of the International Association for Vegetation Science (IAVS), uniting plant ecologists interested in vegetation survey and classification in Europe and beyond.

The purposes of EVS are:

  • to encourage international research collaborations in vegetation survey;
  • to develop common data standards in the provision of phytosociological information about vegetation;
  • to encourage national programmes of vegetation survey across Europe and beyond;
  • to develop software and an electronic network for vegetation data sharing;
  • to maintain a database of European vegetation plots (European Vegetation Archive; http://euroveg.org/eva-database);
  • to maintain the overview of European vegetation (EuroVegChecklist; https://www.synbiosys.alterra.nl/evc/) through the activities of the European Vegetation Classification Committee (http://euroveg.org/evc-committee)
  • to support nature conservation, especially on the international level, by providing scientific information for Natura 2000 and Emerald networks, EUNIS Habitat Classification of the European Environment Agency, habitat monitoring and ecological restoration;
  • to organize scientific meetings (there is one EVS conference each year, taking place in different European countries and always accompanied by field excursions);
  • to support publications on concepts, methods and results of vegetation survey in Europe and beyond.
